Series Six Part One costume index

Last year I wrote a well-recieved Costume Index for Series Five, as well as an Appendix for the minor appearances since at the Proms and such like.

A Christmas Carol

The Christmas Special marks the first episode of Matt Smith’s second season, for which a new costume designer took over from Ray Holman, who had created the initial look for the Eleventh Doctor.

With a new set of eyes in control, the costume has gone some radical but subtle revisions.

Accessories The Doctor is also briefly seen sporting a furry Christmas Santa hat (see left, top), and then the trusty fez (see left, middle), before wearing a Tom Baker style striped scarf (see left, bottom)

Also seen wearing For one scene set in 1950s Hollywood, The Doctor wears a classic white tuxedo, with a black self-tie bow tie (but untied) white dress shirt and black trousers (see below)

The Impossible Astronaut

Although not the first before the cameras, this episode debuts the finalised reboot of Matt’s Costume. The ‘dry-run’ of the new tweed jacket in A Christmas Carol now has the elbow patches added, making it more in keeping with the look of series five.

Accessories The Doctor’s attraction to hats continues with the omnipresent fez during a scene from the Laurel & Hardy film The Flying Deuces (see right, top), as well as a Stetson Hutchins 2X wool cowboy hat in stone for his introduction in Utah (see right, bottom).

Points of detail The bow tie worn in this episode is unusually a self-tie. If you look closely you can see the distinctive loop and end on one side with the end and loop on the other (see left, top).

The dress shirt worn has an unusual detail: a tab collar. This is two strips of fabric attached to the collar which meet in the middle with a button (or on this occasion a press-stud). The intention is to elevate the knot of a tie or the level of a bow tie giving it a more pert appearance.

There are also a couple of shot in the episode which give good views of the new boots worn (see right, top) and of the style of braces The Doctor wears, with four clips and a cross-patch in the centre of the back (see right, bottom).

Points of detail We get to see The Doctor’s burgundy braces a few times in this episode. They look to be the same as Series Five (see left, bottom).

Points of detail I am not 100% sure, but it looks to me that the pale blue shirt seen in this episode may not be the same one as worn in The Rebel Flesh and The Almost People.

Series Five costume index

A while back over on my Third Doctor Blog I ran a series of features about Jon Pertwee’s costume changes during his run as The Doctor.
I wrote it because I was curious to work out the transition from his first year when he wore the same clothes all season, through to his last where he rarely wore the same thing twice!

Matt  Smith’s costume appeared at the outset to be a fairly fixed affair, but as the series has progressed a number of subtle variants have emerged. What follows is an attempt to document these in one place.
